How does IPL remove hair?

The dark pigment in the hair-filled follicles lying below the surface of the skin absorbs the highly controlled flashes of light. The absorbed light heats the hair, which destroys the cells responsible for growing new hair. The result is successful hair reduction without damaging the surrounding tissue.

What happens during an IPL hair removal treatment?

The hair above the skin must be trimmed or shaved prior to the treatment.  You will be asked to wear dark glasses to protect your eyes from the bright light.  A cold gel is spread over the treatment area and the IPL hand piece is applied to the skin. Pulses of light begin disabling your unwanted hair.   Each pulse of light feels like a slight pinch, similar to a snap of a rubber band. Anesthesia is not required and most people tolerate the treatment well.  Most of the hair in the treated area falls out over the next two weeks. 

Can all hair be treated?

IPL's unique design offers you customized laser hair removal treatment based on your hair color, texture and location. Any hair with at least some pigment in it can be treated effectively. Because the pigment in the hair is the target, gray or white hair (which lacks pigment) cannot be effectively treated with any laser or light-based device.

Is IPL safe for all skin types?

IPL is proven to effectively treat unwanted hair on all skin types, including dark-skinned individuals.

Are there any possible side effects?

Side effects are rare.  You may experience some slight reddening or local swelling at the site of hair removal, but this usually goes away within hours.  On rare occasions, some blistering or bruising may occur, but typically resolves quickly.  Also, the skin can become darker or lighter following treatment, but will generally return to normal within a few weeks.  Limiting sun exposure before and after each treatment will minimize the risk of complications.  Following the treatment, you can return to work and resume all regular activities immediately. 

What kind of results should I expect?
